Building Schedule for West Clare Canoe
Phase 1 – 38 hours
First week will set up workshop, purchase materials and prepare for start of course.
· Hand Selection and purchase of good timbers - 2 day
· Making steaming pipe for shaping ribs – ½ day
· Build plug for shaping ribs -1 day
· Build Stand – ½ day
· Preparing facility and setting up workshop -1 day
Phase 2 – Making component parts - 24 hours
· Course orientation and taking measurements of Cully’s Boat
· Mortise frames – 4 hours
· Cut Bow Frames – 1 hours
· Mortise Bow Frames – 2 hour
· Shape nose piece – 1 hour
· Shape Tackings – (14) – 4 hours
· Shape rungs – 4 hours
· Shape knees- 3 hours
· Cut Strewn Frames – 1 hour
· Cut Seats and chamfer – 1hour
Phase 3 - Assemble all components made – 8 hours
· Assemble top frame work and tackings -1 hour
· Assemble stern -1 hour
· Assemble bow – 1hour
· Install seats 1 hour
· Install knees – 3 hours
· Treat all work with Cuprinol - 1 hour
Top frame completed
Phase 4 – Prepare liurachs and ribs – 13 hours
· Turn canoe upside down and secure to building frame
1 hour
· Treat all mortise holes again with Cuprinol -1 hour
· Prepare ribs; cut to length and soak in clean water - 2 hours
· Cut wedges – 4 hours
· Cut Liurachs – 4 hours
· Install building moulds – 1 hour
Phase 5 - Fit liurachs and ribs – 20 hours
· Steam ribs and strap onto plug -3 hours
· Remove ribs from plug and install in canoe – 3 hours
· Secure with wedges -3 hours
· Install Liurachs and clinch nails -1 day
· Treat all work again with Cuprinol - 2 hours
· Release canoe form building frame and remove building moulds –1 hour
Phase 6 – Mouldings, rowlocks, timbels and footsteps – 10 hours
· Turn currach back right way up and prepare moulding and rowlocks, timbels and footsteps - 6 hours
· Install rowlocks, footsteps and timbles -4 hours
Phase 7 – Final primer and paint for timber frame –9 hours
· Prime all woodwork with aluminium primer - 3 hours
· Undercoat and finish coat all timber – 6 hours
·
Phase 8 – Prepare canvas – 21 hours
· Turn boat upside down and measure canvas -1 hour
· Prepare leather canvas for 1 boat
This will be researched and proposal will be put forward as to whether we will cure hide ourselves or purchase leather. Extra cost will be met by the club.
· Sow canvas -1 day
· Apply tar to canvas – 1 hour
· Flip and tack canvas to gunnels – 3 hours
· Apply 3 coats of tar -1 day
Phase 9 - Oars, cleats and toule pins - 16 hours
· Shape oars - 6 hours
· Shape cleats -1 hours
· Shape toule pins - 1 hours
· Prime, undercoat and finish coat oars -1 day
Phase 10 – Applying what is learned
· Repair old canoes in the area with skills learnt during the course.
